The following were some of the key bills and amendments of interest to educators during the 2025 regular session.
Vote No. 1 — SB 2 by Creighton/Buckley establishes a statewide private school voucher program. Funding for the program is set by the Legislature for each biennium with $1 billion for the biennium beginning September 1, 2025. It passed the house 86-61. TCTA opposed the bill. A vote FOR SB 2 is in opposition to TCTA’s position; a vote AGAINST SB 2 is in support of TCTA’s position.
Vote No. 2 — SB 1 by Huffman/Bonnen is the budget bill for the 2025-2026 and 2026-2027 fiscal years. Rep. Rodríguez Ramos offered an amendment that would have added another $6.5 billion to increase teacher salaries. The amendment passed 82-66, but was not included in the final version of the budget. A vote FOR the amendment is in support of TCTA’s position; a vote AGAINST the amendment is in opposition to TCTA’s position.
