TCTA on May 29 sent a letter to Gov. Greg Abbott expressing concerns from members about returning to class in August, and urging that measures be taken to ensure the safety of all children and adults at school campuses, as well as their families.
"While we understand that circumstances vary among communities across the state, we believe it is crucial that there be a straightforward and consistent statewide policy governing when and how teachers and students can safely return to campuses," TCTA Executive Director Jeri Stone wrote.
Such a policy should provide accommodations for students and teachers who are not comfortable returning to in-person classes, require districts to provide appropriate protective equipment, and include a reporting and enforcement mechanism.
TCTA believes decisions regarding opening dates for the coming school year must be based on recommendations of state and national health experts and welcomes the opportunity to discuss issues regarding safety and reopening schools with Gov. Abbott and his staff.
