For Angie Redwine, teaching is a calling that goes beyond the classroom.
“It’s about investing in students, supporting their growth, and making a positive impact on the school and the community for years to come,” she said.
Redwine has definitely made an impact after more than 30 years in the classroom teaching mathematics. She was honored as a statewide finalist in the Lifetime Achievement Secondary category of H-E-B’s 2026 Excellence in Education Awards.
This fall, she begins her 32nd year in education, teaching AP Precalculus, Algebra 2 and Honors Algebra 2 at Abernathy High School in Abernathy ISD, which is north of Lubbock. She’s also the Student Council sponsor, UIL coordinator for the high school, freshman class sponsor and serves on the homecoming committee.
“What I love most about being a teacher is helping students discover their strengths, believe in themselves, and find their passion in life,” she said. “I also love investing in the families of our small community, building relationships that extend beyond the classroom and strengthen the future of our town. Watching my students grow in confidence, overcome challenges, and realize their potential is the greatest reward and the reason I love coming to work every day.”The support Redwine receives from her colleagues goes a long way in helping her stay motivated when challenges arise. “We all work together as one team, supporting and encouraging each other to do what’s best for our students. That strong sense of teamwork, along with the support of my family, helps me stay focused on making a positive impact on student learning and growth.”
Family support also led Redwine into teaching as she followed in her mother’s footsteps.
“Growing up, I watched her pour her heart into her students — teaching, encouraging, and caring for them with so much patience. Her passion for learning, and the way she truly believed in the power of education, made a lasting impression on me,” Redwine said. “She showed me that teaching isn’t just a job — it’s a calling, something that can change lives and open doors.”
Redwine adds that teaching is more than a career — it is an opportunity to inspire, encourage and change lives every day.
Her advice to other educators is to “Lead with your heart, believe in every student’s potential, and remember that the small moments of kindness, encouragement and dedication often leave the greatest lasting impact. And don’t forget to have fun and laugh with your students — those joyful moments help build meaningful relationships and create memories that last a lifetime.”
“Being a finalist means joining a group of outstanding educators who share a deep passion for teaching and a commitment to making a difference in the lives of their students. It is an incredible honor to be recognized among such inspiring teachers, and it motivates me to continue growing, learning and creating meaningful opportunities for every student who walks into my classroom.”
