Margaret Kelley

Margaret Kelley, a special education teacher at Timy Baranoff Elementary in Austin ISD and a TCTA member since 2016, received a Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching grant to travel to New Zealand this year.

Kelley will spend a semester attending graduate level classes at Victoria University of Wellington, leading seminars and conducting an independent inquiry project focused on inclusion models for special education students. She said New Zealand is the ideal place to conduct research on inclusion because in 2016, the New Zealand Ministry of Education collaborated with schools, teachers, families and the community to redesign special education from the ground up. During her semester abroad, Kelley will do observation in schools, interview educators and families to learn more about the improvements to special education and gather ideas for the U.S. to implement.
