The first wave of Social Security claims resulting from the Social Security Fairness Act signed into law on Jan. 5 has been processed and checks are being sent, the Social Security Administration said this week.
The repeal of the Windfall Elimination Provision and the Government Pension Offset means nearly 3 million Americans will get bigger checks and/or be eligible for Social Security benefits.
A SSA spokesperson said most affected beneficiaries will begin receiving their new monthly benefit amount in April, covering March 2025. An additional one-time check with retroactive payments is expected by the end of March.
Those affected will also get a letter from SSA explaining their benefit change and/or retroactive payment.
