Sherry Miller, TCTA State President-Elect and a music teacher in Killeen ISD, spoke to the school board on behalf of the Killeen CTA at a Tuesday night meeting.

The district currently plans for school to begin with both in-person and remote options on Aug. 17. Miller urged the board to begin the school year virtually, noting “If we start on Day 1 with more than 45,000 students and approximately 7,000 teachers and other employees without regard for whether the virus is under control, it is entirely possible, if not likely, that within two weeks, we will have a highly significant number of COVID-19 cases spreading throughout the district.”

She added, “These decisions should not be based on whether a particular approach is difficult, or inconvenient or politically undesirable. They must be made in a manner that best protects the health and safety of our students and our employees.”
