TRS bills pass out of Senate Finance

The Senate Finance Committee heard and passed two TRS-related bills in its Wednesday hearing.

SB 202 by Sen. Charles Schwertner would prohibit districts who rehire retirees from directly or indirectly passing along the costs of the TRS-required surcharges to the rehired employee.

SB 288 by Sen. Kel Seliger is one of a few proposals regarding how best to handle situations where a retiree has returned to work and (often unintentionally) violated the employment-after-retirement limitations. Under current law, TRS must withhold retirement benefits for any months in which this happens, but Seliger’s proposal would create a three-strike system, beginning with a warning notice.
