Senate passes student discipline bill

The Texas Senate passed HB 6 by Rep. Jeff Leach (R-Plano), a major student discipline bill that bolsters options for teachers and administrators to address student behavior in the classroom.

TCTA testified in support of the bill in House and Senate hearings, describing the types of discipline challenges teachers face. The bill's Senate sponsor, Sen. Charles Perry (R-Lubbock) has filed legislation on student discipline in the past, but none advanced this far in the process.

It seems likely that Leach will accept the Senate's changes to the bill and encourage his House colleagues to concur, sending the bill directly to the governor's desk to be signed into law. HB 6 stands to be a major victory for teachers in a post-COVID student behavior world.
