House budget scheduled for floor hearing tomorrow

The Texas House of Representatives will hear SB 1, the state budget, on the floor on April 10.

Commonly referred to as "Budget Night," the process of finalizing the state budget in the House is always lengthy. House members typically file hundreds of amendments to the budget, with each debated on the floor before being voted up or down. Depending on the content of the amendment, debate on each can range from a few minutes to multiple hours. At times, a parliamentary inquiry on whether a given amendment is even permissible can take hours itself, with members waiting patiently in the meantime.

After all amendments are considered, the House then votes on the bill as a whole. If it passes, it will then arrive at a conference committee between select members of the House and Senate to negotiate the budget's final form to be sent to the governor for his signature.
