The National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) measures students' progress in various subjects in 4th, 8th and 12th grades. Fourth and eighth grade students in Texas performed better than the national average on the 2007 reading and math NAEP, as reported in "The Nation's Report Card." Texas was one of only four states in the nation that made gains in all content areas on the 2007 8th grade math NAEP and one of only six states making gains on the 4th grade reading NAEP.
Overall Texas ranked*
- 9th in the nation for 4th grade math
- 8th in the nation for 8th grade math
- 12th in the nation for 4th grade reading
- 11th in the nation for 8th grade reading
Additionally, Texas ranked among the top groups in the nation for all major student subgroups in both 4th and 8th grade math NAEP results:

- 2nd in the nation for African-American student groups
- 3rd in the nation for Hispanic student groups
- 4th in the nation for white 4th graders
- 3rd in the nation for disadvantaged 4th grade students
8th grade math results:
- 2nd in the nation for white, African-American and Hispanic subgroups
- 3rd in the nation for disadvantaged student groups

- 8th in the nation for white student groups
- 8th in the nation for African-American student groups
- 7th in the nation for Hispanic student groups and
