Resolution filed to force vote on Social Security Fairness Act

On Thursday, Feb. 12, U.S. Congressman Jim Turner (D-Crockett) filed a resolution in the House of Representatives to force a debate and vote on H.R. 594 "The Social Security Fairness Act." This bill would eliminate the Government Pension Offset (GPO) and Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP), both provisions harmful to Texas teachers and public employees, from the current Social Security code. Elimination of these provisions would allow teachers to collect their full Social Security survivor benefits.

This action occurred one day after the House gave final approval to H.R. 743, federal legislation to repeal the last-day exemption from the Government Pension Offset (which reduces spousal Social Security benefits for most Texas school employees) and require employees to work for at least 60 months in an entity participating in both TRS and Social Security in order to qualify for the exemption. The bill was approved and is awaiting the president’s signature.

The new release announcing Turner’s resolution is available on his Web site.
