AUSTIN — Mary Spacek, a grade 4 math and social studies teacher at Bay City Middle School in the Bay City Independent School District, has been re-elected as Teacher Personal Services committee chair of the Texas Classroom Teachers Association. Her term in office begins June 1, 2008. Founded in 1927, TCTA is an independent, nonunion association for Texas teaching professionals, which serves 50,000 members across the state.

Spacek was re-elected to a two-year term in February at TCTA’s annual convention in Houston. In this position, she will oversee the committee that administers all of the personal services and discounts available to Association members. As a statewide officer, she will serve on both the TCTA Board of Directors and the Association's 10-member Executive Committee.

Spacek is a longtime TCTA member, who previously served on the TCTA Board as district three director and on various state committees, including chair of the ACT For TCTA committee. She is an active member of the Bay City Classroom Teachers Association, where she has served as president, faculty representative, and as a member of the joint consultation committee. She has served on several education committees, including the TEA Grant Review for Staff Development and Parent Training; State Board for Educator Certification Pilot Test Review committee; TAKS, Item Review-Grade 4 Math; and the Master Mathematics Teacher Framework Review committee. She is a member of Alpha Delta Kappa Delta Upsilon Sorority. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Incarnate Word College.

Spacek serves as American Legion Post 346 Chaplain, and as a member of the Assumption Catholic Church Choir. She has been named the Cherry Elementary Teacher of the Year; Bay City Educator of the Year finalist; Bay City Middle School Teacher of the Year; Bay City Chamber of Commerce Educator of the Year; and Bay City ISD Celebration of Excellence Award winner.

The 2008-09 TCTA Board also will include Ruby Tanguma of Bay City and Linda Light of Victoria, serving as district three directors.

TCTA is based in Austin and is the only statewide teachers association that limits active-level membership to those directly involved in classroom teaching or teaching support.
