AUSTIN — Susan Lewis, a grades K-5 math specialist at Fisher Elementary School in the Northside Independent School District, has been named president-elect of the Texas Classroom Teachers Association. Founded in 1927, TCTA is an independent, nonunion association for Texas teaching professionals, which serves 50,000 members across the state.

Lewis was elected in February at TCTA’s annual convention in Houston. She begins serving as president-elect on June 1, 2008, and will assume the presidency on June 1, 2009. In the positions of president-elect and president, Lewis will help guide the Association’s efforts as it works to enhance the teaching profession and provide a full array of services and advocacy to members.

Lewis currently serves on the Select Committee on Public School Accountability, where she is the only member who currently teaches in a public school classroom. Created during the 2007 legislative session, the committee is conducting a comprehensive review of the public school accountability system and making recommendations on how the system should be restructured.

A member of TCTA for nearly 30 years, Lewis has served at the statewide level as chair of the Curriculum and Instruction committee and as district 20 director. She is very active on the local level, serving the Northside Classroom Teachers Association as president, faculty representative, and scholarship committee member. She represented NCTA on the District Bond Election Planning committee and Broad Prize Professional Organization committee. She is a former member of the Duncanville and Slaton CTAs.

Lewis’ other professional memberships include the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development and Phi Delta Kappa. She also volunteers for the Southwest School of Art and Craft. Lewis earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Texas A&M University and master of education degree from Texas Tech University.

The 2008-09 TCTA Board of Directors also will include Dori Peterson of San Antonio (Northside), Rosa Elena Reyes of Eagle Pass and Mark Clanton of San Antonio (North East), serving as district 20 directors.

TCTA is the only statewide teachers association that limits active-level membership to those directly involved in classroom teaching or teaching support.
