AUSTIN — Ann Brackeen, a teacher at Lubbock High School, has been elected as Curriculum & Instruction committee chair of the Texas Classroom Teachers Association. Her term in office begins June 1, 2008. Founded in 1927, TCTA is an independent, nonunion association for Texas teaching professionals, which serves 50,000 members across the state.
Brackeen was elected to a two-year term in February at TCTA’s annual convention in Houston. In this position, she will oversee the committee that addresses the Association's stance/involvement on statewide curriculum and instruction issues. The committee also helps keep TCTA members updated on shifts in statewide policies. As a statewide officer, she will continue to serve on both the TCTA Board of Directors and the Association's 10-member Executive Committee.
Brackeen, a TCTA member for more than 15 years, previously served as vice-chair of the committee and has represented district 17 on the TCTA Board of Directors since 2003. She currently serves as District 17 Council president. In addition to her state-level service, she has served the Lubbock Classroom Teachers Association as president, president-elect, professional rights and responsibilities chair and faculty representative. She is a member of the Campus Site Based committee, LISD Morale committee at Lubbock High School, and Region 17 Teacher of the Year panel. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Texas Tech University.
Her community service extends to the Girl Scouts board of directors, Lubbock United Way board, coordinator of the March of Dimes campaign for Lubbock High (10 years), Lubbock High Booster Club president, Broadway Church of Christ infant and preschool Sunday school teacher and youth group sponsor, and the Family Career and Community Leaders of America sponsor (23 years). She was named a Woman of Distinction 2004 – Girl Scouts of Caprock Council, and Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.
The 2008-09 TCTA Board also includes Jan Pate of Slaton, TCTA President; Mandy Haire of Slaton, statewide chair of the Governance committee; and Suzanne Garcia of Slaton, Rosemary Cardenas of Lubbock and Cristal Isaacks of Levelland, serving as district 17 directors. District 17 covers 20 counties in the Texas Panhandle area.
TCTA is based in Austin and is the only statewide teachers association that limits active-level membership to those directly involved in classroom teaching or teaching support.
