Susan Lewis, TCTA Chair of the Curriculum & Instruction Committee, has been appointed by Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and Speaker of the House Tom Craddick to the Select Committee on Public School Accountability. Created during the 2007 legislative session, the committee is charged with conducting a comprehensive review of the public school accountability system. Lewis is the only appointee to the committee who currently teaches in a public school classroom.

Passed during the 2007 legislative session, Senate Bill 1031 replaces the current TAKS test with end-of-course (EOC) exams in grades 9-12, starting with 9th grade students in the 2011-12 school year. It also requires the formation of a 15-member Select Committee on Public School Accountability to conduct a comprehensive review of the public school accountability system and make recommendations regarding how the system should be structured. The Legislature will be required to adopt a new public accountability system aligned with the new assessments by Sept. 1, 2011.
