New rules adopted by the commissioner of education, effective March 10, 2009, require personnel who assist with extracurricular athletic activities to complete an extracurricular activity safety training program beginning with the 2008-09 school year. This includes all coaches, trainers, marching band directors and sponsors.
Offered online by the University Interscholastic League (UIL), the safety training will cover emergency action planning; CPR; communicating with 911 emergency service operators and personnel; and recognizing symptoms of potentially catastrophic injuries.
This requirement resulted from Senate Bill 82 passed during the 80th lesgislative session, which also directs schools to conduct an annual safety drill that incorporates this training and to provide students training in recognizing symptoms of catastrophic injuries.
